What is cellulite?
Cellulite is fat beneath the skin which has a bumpy appearance because it pushes up against connective tissue, causing the skin above it to pucker.
Busting The Top 3 Cellulite Myths
MYTH #1: Skinny people don’t have cellulite.
FALSE. It’s estimated that almost 90 percent of women have some degree of cellulite (even super models!) and women are more likely to have it than men due to the differences in their hormones, body composition and subcutaneous tissue structure.
MYTH #2: You can get rid of cellulite with creams, wraps or other beauty treatments.
FALSE. While treatments like liposuction, massages, lasers or creams may help reduce the appearance of cellulite, the effect is only temporary (and usually quite pricey!). Save your cash and invest in healthy foods and workouts that you enjoy, and find flattering clothing that you feel comfortable in. Life is too short to sit on the sidelines because you are afraid to show your cellulite to the world!
MYTH #3: You can get rid of cellulite with specific exercises.
What is the best exercise to minimize cellulite? – Sharon Acosta, FB
Sharon asked me this great question on Facebook, and I thought this was the perfect time to answer it. You can’t spot reduce (or lose fat in one specific spot) so doing one specific exercise or movement isn’t the solution. While it’s true that you CAN build muscle in certain areas of your body (focusing on lower body workouts for example can build more lean muscle mass in your thighs), it may not necessarily reduce cellulite if your overall body fat composition hasn’t changed, if you are genetically predispositioned to cellulite or even if you are of a certain age since skin loses it’s elasticity (making cellulite appear more prominent) as we get older.
Instead of just trying to target your cellulite hot spots, focus on reducing your overall body fat with a well balanced self-care regimen that includes strength training (which becomes even more important as we age since we naturally begin to lose muscle mass as we get older – don’t you love the aging process?), cardio exercise, stress relieving techniques, plenty of sleep along with a healthy diet. It’s also important to note that even if you do everything right, you may still experience some cellulite. I have it too. Even some super models have it.
Even the super fit and strong celebrity trainer (from the hit TV show “The Biggest Loser”) Jillian Michaels has admitted that she too has cellulite, so don’t beat yourself up about it.
[Michaels told Fitness Magazine in their July/August 2011 issue that she has cellulite on her butt: “I hate it!” she said. “There’s cellulite on it and no matter what I do, I can’t get rid of it. The reality is that it’s connective tissue. I can starve and my boobs will go and my face will get gaunt, but I will still have cellulite.”]
My final thoughts on reducing cellulite: Focus on taking care of your body from the inside out. It’s easy to get caught up in the idea of having a perfect body, but instead, let’s be grateful for what our bodies do for us everyday. We often wait until we are dealing with a major health crisis to appreciate what we have – don’t let that happen to you! Exercise and fuel your body right — at the end of the day, a healthy, strong and energetic body is what matters most.
A little cellulite really isn’t that big of a deal.
